Smart Options Workshop Preparation

Please complete TO DO LIST before Smart Options workshop To achieve best learning experience, here are a few things that you SHOULD COMPLETE before attending your workshop. All 3 items are critical to your learning, please make sure you finish all of them. In this email, you will go through the process of opening 2 broker accounts. Take note that you will be using both during the workshop: For Charting - TD Ameritrade Asia (Thinkorswim) For Trading - TWS (IB or Halifax TWS)

TO DO LIST (3 items)

1. Apply for TD Ameritrade Asia (Thinkorswim) [for Charting]

You are required to apply for TDAmeritrade Asia Live OR Paper Money account prior to the workshop as this will be the platform for charting during the workshop and tutorials. And, we will be using TDA Asia to view the Options chain for spread (this feature is not available in TWS). Choose either one of the following:
  • If you apply a Live account and funded USD$1,000, you can access the platform with live data quotes.
  • If you apply a Paper Money account, you can access the platform for 60 days with delayed data. You will need to re-apply after 60 days. Paper Money Account is a demo account that allows you to do simulated trading. You can practise trading without risking any money through Paper Money account.
*Note: You will either need a live account OR register a paper money account in order to download Thinkorswim platform. Thinkorswim Platform setup guide:  After registering account with TD Ameritrade Asia, you can use the username and password to login Thinkorswim. So, if you already complete the online registration, follow the guide below to setup your platform. If you haven’t done the registration, please register for a live/ paper money account first.  

2. Apply for Broker Account [for Trading]

You are require to have a broker account to practise. However, TWS platform will be the main trading platform during workshop. 
  • You can skip this part, if you already have ANY one of the following:      1. Interactive Brokers live or paper trading account      2. Halifax TWS live or paper trading account
  • If you don't have any account yet, you can either apply for Interactive Broker Live account OR IB Paper Trading account.
Apply for Interactive Brokers (IB) For this broker, you need to fund minimum USD$10,000 to your account within 45 days otherwise you have to apply again. *It will take about 10 working days to approve your application.  Apply for IB Paper Trading Account This Paper Trading provide you immediate access to the broker platform. Paper Trading is a simulated account that you can practise without risking real money. 3. Install TWS Platform to your computer

Interactive Brokers, Halifax TWS and IB Paper Trading account are using the same TWS Platform. Please follow the guide to complete your TWS Platform Setup:

Settings for Your Broker Account (Interactive Broker/ Halifax TWS) After your live broker account is approved, you need to configure the following:
  • Settings for Non-professional Status 
  • Market Data Subscription

By default, all paper trading come with delayed data. TDA Asia will offer you free live quotes if you fund more than USD$1,000.
